The Rich History of Moonstone

It all began in ancient Rome, where Moonstone was first found and was believed to have been solidified moonlight. That is where the name came from. It was also believed that the Roman Goddess of Moon, Diana could be seen when looked inside the stone closely. To this day, Moonstone is a symbol of good luck, love, and wisdom by those who possess it and it all started in its initial days.
Historically it was even believed that Moonstone could enhance the decision making of a person by making them smart and clear their mind. It also was believed to bestow upon a person, the powers of second-sight, and prophecy. A magical looking stone with such benefits was obviously a popular option to make jewelry out of.
Moonstone
Moonstone also has historical roots in ancient India. It is considered a sacred stone in India and also a talisman of love, making it an ideal wedding gift even today. It is also thought to be instrumental in the rejoining of estranged lovers and reconciliation of distanced loved ones.
It was a belief in ancient India that passionate love will find its way in the heart of two people wearing the Moonstone on a full moon night close to each other. In India, it is even believed that Moonstone was set into the head of the Moon God, Chandra Shekhar, whose name literally meant “the one who wears the Moon”.
Famously known as the traveler’s stone, Moonstone was known to be the talisman of the moon and the guiding light for sailors, which meant Moonstone was used to bring good favors from the celestial God of guidance, the moon, which also controlled the pull on tides.
All these factors made the moon a significant deity for sailors and travelers in the old times, and Moonstone an important ornament to protect them from misfortunes and mishaps on their voyage. That traditional use has carried forward generations and even today people who travel long distances in their cars like to keep a piece of Moonstone in their dashboards.
Synonymous with the moon, love, luck, good fortune, and protection, Moonstone has always been a significant part of the crystal healing world. If myths are to be believed, Blue Moonstones were a product of the ocean and the moon’s combined spiritual powers.
Another myth says that a Moonstone would lose its shine and luster if the owner has a lot of pent up anger which the stone will pick up and fade. But fortunately, through years and years of having time to study the stone, we can eliminate the myths and stick with the facts, and factually Moonstone is one of the stones with tremendous aesthetic value and numerous metaphysical properties that make it perfect for any crystal or jewelry collection.
